From airport to the city

Interesting historical places

The whole of Bahrain is about a hundred square kilometers smaller than Kyiv, so it is quite possible to travel around the country in a few days.

Although it is presented mainly as a cluster of skyscrapers in advertising pictures, it is also historical. In particular, the 5,000-year-old Qal'at al-Bahrain from the UNESCO list. A long time ago, this place was the capital and the port of the ancient state of Dilmun, and in one of the cultural layers, archaeologists have discovered a Portuguese fortress. And what's the most interesting – only 25% are excavated. 

Al Khamis Mosque is the second historical monument worth paying attention to. It was built either in the 7th or 11th century (researchers have not yet agreed on the exact date) and then rebuilt in the 15-16th centuries.

But the modern Al Fateh Mosque, a hallmark of Bahrain, is situated within Manama, unlike previous locations. It can accommodate 7,000 people, making it one of the largest Islamic temples in the world. Due to the absence of high buildings near the mosque, it seems even taller, and the bright night illumination perfectly emphasizes its silhouette.

You can finish the tour of the historical buildings in the 19th century Riffa Fort. In addition to walking along the mighty fortifications, here you can admire the view of the desert from the walls.

We also want to draw your attention to two modern skyscrapers. Bahrain World Trade Center – two more than 200-meter sail-shaped towers connected by bridges – stand out significantly against the background of even the high-rise part of Manama. At night, the lights of the two "sails" are beautifully reflected in the waters of the Persian Gulf. You can meditate on these lights from the island opposite (there is a bridge to it) for almost hours).

Establishments

They use a lot of meat and seafood in Bahraini cuisine but few vegetables and fruits because the country's territory is a desert, so it isn't easy to grow anything.

Meat dishes include dajaj (stewed chicken in tomato sauce) and dozens of pilaf and kebabs variations.

Also, sweet balaleet vermicelli has an interesting taste. It is served for breakfast with cardamom caramel and omelet.

And do not deny yourself the pleasure of drinking coffee. Classic black is perfectly prepared here, and you can replace trendy flat-white or AeroPress with coffee with rose water and cardamom.

You can rent a very modest hotel room from $ 25. Prices for the more equipped standard rooms start at $ 45, and luxury rooms at $ 90–100.

Where to go nearby

Bahrain is an excellent country for diving because the warm sea allows the development of flora and fauna of all colors and shapes. There are many diving centers on the coast where you can rent a suit and hire an instructor.
