Transport

You can travel along Heraklion by bus (by the way, it is the most convenient public transport also to travel around the island of Crete). The ticket costs € 1.2.

Interesting historical places

Do not miss the Agios Minas Cathedral in the center of Heraklion – an incredible example of Greco-Byzantine architectural style. It is one of the largest cathedrals in Greece, accommodating up to 8,000 people. And not far from the cathedral, look at the Venetian loggia, where the Italian nobility arranged rich receptions.

Also on the shores of the Aegean Sea is the Venetian fortress of Koules, which is very well preserved. Tourists can get inside and go upstairs.

And, of course, such a city could not do without a landmark museum. In particular, the archeological museum preserves an extensive collection of Minoan art.

Crete is a continuous open-air museum and a collection of natural wonders. First of all, you should go to one of the oldest places Knossos, a former city-state on the outskirts of Heraklion. And although the building has undergone the destructive power of time, it is a fantastic feeling to walk in places where life was booming about 4 thousand years ago.

By the way, according to ancient Greek myth, namely palace of Knossos is the legendary labyrinth of the Minotaur. And here, for the first time in human history, high-rise buildings, water supply, sewerage, artificial lighting, and paved roads were built.

And, of course, do not neglect the opportunity to soak up the sun on the beaches near Heraklion if you come in the warm season. The most famous of them are Karteros, Arena, Ammoudara, and Gouves.
