French, Venetian, English, and Greek architecture has influenced the eponymous capital of Corfu or Kerkyra. Therefore, its architecture is very diverse: narrow streets, Baroque buildings, colorful houses with interestingly decorated balconies and windows.

We advise you to visit the ancient Liston Street, paved with marble slabs on which only representatives of aristocratic families were allowed to walk in ancient times.

And pop in the Saint Spyridon Church, which is considered the island's patron saint. The saint's relics are kept here, and his shoes are changed every six months because it is rumored they wear out. The Corfians believe that the saint travels around the island every night to help those in need.

Corfu Island is almost twice the size of Kharkiv. Therefore, we suggest exploring historical sites not only in the city but throughout the island. Not far from the main city, visit the Achillion Palace, the former summer residence of the Austro-Hungarian empress. The palace is elegant and filled with authentic details. There is a garden on the territory, and on the second floor, there is an old casino.

Establishments

In Corfu, it is worth trying seafood risotto, traditional grilled lamb marinated in olive oil and lemon juice, fish in different variations, fried octopus, and squid. And one of the most popular snacks is feta cheese made from goat's milk.

Among the fish, we recommend trying cod with fried potatoes and garlic sauce and souvlaki – pieces of fried meat on skewers, served with pita bread (dough product).

Where to go nearby

Among the beaches, we recommend Kontogialos, where the water is crystal clear. And under the water, you can see small colorful fish. There are two free volleyball courts on the beach. In addition, the coastal area is large enough to feel comfortable even in the high season.

And also, climb the highest point of the island, Mount Pantokrator, and from there see the island's beautiful nature. Also, visit the fishing town of Kassiopi with colorful houses on the coast. And head to the Byzantine castle of Angelokastro, located on a hill overlooking the endless sea.
