From airport to the city

You can get from the airport to the city of Zakynthos by bus, except Saturday and Sunday. The ticket costs € 1.8–3.6 you can buy it from the driver.

Since the distance is short, a taxi will be inexpensive – approximately € 10. However, keep in mind that you may be asked to pay extra for too much luggage.

Transport

You can travel by Zakynthos Island by bus. However, we recommend renting a car, which costs from € 26 per day, because the island is worth often stopping near particularly picturesque places.

Interesting historical places

Zakynthos is the main town of Zakynthos Island. It is a lovely port town with bright buildings and flowers on the terraces. We suggest starting the walk from Dionysios Solomos Square near the port. The old Venetian church is located here. It was the only temple that survived the earthquake of 1953. The temple is small but very well maintained and pleasing to the eye. And also you can visit the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Greece in this square. The museum is also not very large but is especially valuable because it houses archeological finds saved after that earthquake.

Here in the port, you can choose a cozy restaurant overlooking the azure sea and mountains.

Before going to remote places in Zakynthos, explore the capital's outskirts. In particular, nearby is the Marine Park, where most of the Caretta-Caretta turtles live in the entire Mediterranean. It is the only species of loggerhead sea turtle in the world. It is listed in the Red Book, and from 12 till 4 am, aircraft traffic is prohibited since turtles lay eggs on the beach relatively close to the airport.

In the city of Zakynthos, you can relax not only on the beach. In particular, three wineries conduct tasting tours in the town's vicinity – Grampsas, Solomos, and Callinico.

Important: islanders are very strict about siesta in Zakynthos. Everything is closed from 12 till 4 pm (and it's not even clear if it will open later). Therefore, it is better to stock up on everything you need in the morning.

Establishments

As a rule, restaurants all over the island serve large portions and a compliment at the end. Therefore, keep the balance of the number of ordered dishes.

The cuisine on the island is the same as everywhere in Greece: Greek salad, moussaka, and gyros. And, of course, fine wines from local wineries.

Accommodation

You can rent a room on the island from € 30. The closer to the sights and the better the view from the window, the higher the price is. Apartments cost from € 40, but you will have to pay about twice as much for proximity to the sea.

Where to go nearby

Without exaggeration, the main attraction of the island is the Navagio Bay. Everything is like in a fairy tale: snow-white sand, deep blue sea, picturesque rock. It is impossible to get to the beach from land, so you will have to go on a tour or rent a boat yourself. So, in addition to Instagram photos in the bay, you will also get a boat trip.

Together with the incredible panorama, the blue caves await you in the bay. The sunbeams make their way through cracks in the stone and create a blue shimmer on the water. Only nature can create such an incredible picture.

And after watching the landscapes, you can go to Askos Park, where deer, raccoons, and giant turtles live in natural conditions.
