Interesting historical places

If you dreamed of traveling all over the country in one day, then Bahrain is your chance to do that. The area of the whole kingdom is 765.3 km².

Not far from the airport, there is Arad Fort, from which history lovers can start their journey. The Ottoman conquerors built this fort in the late 15th century. Walls 2–3 meters high were erected to protect people from cannon fire.

And then you can go to the 5,000-year-old Qal’at al-Bahrain, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was once the capital and port of the ancient state of Dilmun. However, archaeologists have discovered a Portuguese fortress in one of the cultural layers. So this is another must-visit place if you are fascinated by history and thousand-year buildings.

But Bahrain is famous not only for its ancient stone fortifications but also for its skyscrapers. So pay attention to the Bahrain World Trade Center, which consists of two 240-meter towers connected by bridges. Just imagine the view of the city from there!

Bahrain’s national dishes consist of Arabic, African, Persian, Indian, and European cuisines because the state was an important trading port in ancient times.

There are many meat dishes in the local cuisine; the most popular are chicken, lamb, and camel. So try dajaj (stewed chicken in tomato sauce) and baked lamb stuffed with nuts, rice, eggs, and vegetables.

Also, order the Bedouin dish, sweet balaleet vermicelli, cooked with omelet and caramel. And also, enjoy Bahraini cornstarch halva with nuts, sipping black coffee or latte with saffron.

Where to go nearby

You can go to the southernmost point of the Bahrain archipelago – Hawar Island. It is one of the driest parts of the country, so it is not inhabited. The island has only a hotel with 140 rooms and a police station. However, you can come here for a short excursion, to visit the wildlife.
